Rio Lagartos Yucatan
Commissioned by the State of Yucatan, this project explored the use of low impact development strategies that would preserve the delicate balance between the salt water and fresh water of the Rio Lagartos Estuary, yet encourage commercial development along the magnificent Yucatan coastline. The proposed strategy involved the recovery and modernization of several abandoned 18th century French settlements that made salt from sea foam and currently exist in ruins. Discreetly located solar arrays would provide electricity for each village and a new concierge and restaurant building. The historic worker houses would be repurposed as rooms for rent. Low draft solar powered boats would commute patrons to each site, past the flamingos and through the shallow estuary.
