Happy Turf™ is a research project for an alternative solution to turf grass for shaded yards. The approach accepts the cultural expectation for a green and verdant environment by substituting a pointillist geometry of sedges, dianthus and perennials for the uniform beauty of St. Augustine grass. Upon planting, natural competition blends the plants into impressionistic areas. Most of the year the new ecology uses zero water. In the hottest summer months water use is 1/20th of conventional lawn. The patron of the project is a founder of The Container Store and is hopeful that market forces will proliferate the new turf prototype.
